Artist Statement

Painting for me is a constant study of process. I enjoy seeking inspiration, struggling to resolve the problems created by the application of materials and ultimately presenting them for new eyes to see.

The process begins by looking at the blank panel to consider possible compositions within its space. I then try to allow subconscious inspirations from daily life to bubble up to the forefront of my mind.
These inspirations come from constantly absorbing things such as architecture, fashion, advertising, nature and music. The composition is further informed by the variations of color and texture that occur in the beginning layers of the painting. New relationships develop that I must be willing to recognize and work with. Because I work in layers, which must dry over night between applications, I am able to see the work with fresh eyes, which allows me to identify and nurture these relationships over the many weeks it takes to create the work.

I’ve learned to trust my eye to know when a work is complete. But by then living with the piece I am able to scrutinize its completion. On my own walls it can surprise me and interrupt my daily routine to stop and experience it. If it engages me and still feels resolved, then it is.
