LIMN gallery is pleased to present Harry Siter’s first solo with LIMN Art gallery. Siter is well known for his massive wood furniture where the use of wood and bronze finds balance such as a massive split tree trunk resting onto elongated bronze stilts. His figurative sculptures are what make Siter explore his personal feelings he shares with the molecular makeup of a tree, a person or an object. “The desire to create work inspired by these inanimate objects we share the world and universe with, led me to investigate further. The path became clear as I attempted to recreate these forms into a new form. The tree becomes human, and human becomes tree. The rock takes its place in line to be recognized for its beauty and place in evolution, it too shares the same carbon. As the work developed it became clear that the materials represented different spirit worlds.”
When figurative persona manifests itself out of a tree trunk, Siter feels the urge to give it a little help. And so, personalities start to emerge and the bare old tree trunk becomes “ The Janitor”, “ The Gardener”, or “Him”. Each figure requires a particular technique and trunks up to the seven feet command for some freedom. With the characteristics of the wood in mind, Siter finalizes the concept of the sculpture. Whatever it is a boyish posture of a woman perched on high heels, or a body womanly shaped with man’s genitals, Siter is ready to meet the challenge. With a chain saw and a few chisels, Siter carves until life is found.
The bronze castings are treated with more fluidity in form and follow the developmental path they must take to be rendered, ultimately joining the two materials to create new forms. By blending the two dynamics, Siter discovers also new layers and theories as the two worlds meet. Suddenly new directions in thought and feeling emerge and in turn, they create a new physic.
Harry Siter has shown extensively in the US and his work is in numerous collections around the world. Siter studied at CCAC where he studied under Viola Frey. Siter works and lives in Napa, CA.
